The official division of the country of Ireland into two separate regions — Northern and Southern Ireland — took place in May , through an act passed by the British Parliament. The original intention was for both regions to remain within the United Kingdom , but the Irish War of Independence led to the south seceding from the UK in , while Northern Ireland opted to remain. With attempts at this legislation having begun in , the Government of Ireland Act of was the fourth try at establishing Home Rule in Ireland — that is, affording the country a certain amount of freedom to self-govern while retaining its position as part of the United Kingdom. The potential division of the country into six Northern Irish counties and twenty-six Southern Irish counties was included in the Fourth Irish Home Rule Bill of in order to try to reconcile the conflicting wishes of Irish nationalists and unionists , which had caused the earlier three bills to fail and led to the Home Rule Crisis.

Why the protocol on Ireland / Northern Ireland matters – Katy Hayward

A partition is a very brief section of a paper following the paper's preliminary sections such as an introduction and, depending on the paper, what is called "narration" in classical rhetoric, a run-down of what has happened, such as what critics have generally said, that motivates and frames your argument. Most often, in papers of the kind you are writing right now in upper-division English classes, the partition is a very short paragraph, no longer, probably, than three sentences. A partition can be especially helpful for the reader in a lengthy, complex argument: it can clarify the issues and can make the argument easier for the reader to follow. Like the introduction and narration section of a paper if you have one , the partition builds your ethos by laying out clearly for your reader the scope and perhaps even the path of and sources for your argument.
