An ice age is a period of colder global temperatures and recurring glacial expansion capable of lasting hundreds of millions of years. Humans developed significantly during the most recent glaciation period, emerging as the dominant land animal afterward as megafauna such as the wooly mammoth went extinct. Capable of lasting hundreds of millions of years, these periods are interspersed with regular warmer interglacial intervals in which at least one major ice sheet is present. Earth is currently in the midst of an ice age, as the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets remain intact despite moderate temperatures.

A University of Arizona-led team has nailed down the temperature of the last ice age—the Last Glacial Maximum of 20, years ago—to about 46 degrees Fahrenheit 7. Their findings allow climate scientists to better understand the relationship between today's rising levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide—a major greenhouse gas—and average global temperature. The Last Glacial Maximum, or LGM, was a frigid period when huge glaciers covered about half of North America, Europe and South America and many parts of Asia, while flora and fauna that were adapted to the cold thrived. Tierney is lead author of a paper published today in Nature that found that the average global temperature of the ice age was 6 degrees Celsius 11 F cooler than today.

Abstract Through three different experiments we were to find the quality of NaCl as a deicer. These experiments included testing the freezing point depression of NaCl in solution at two different concentrations, testing for the H of an aqueous NaCl solution, and combining NaCl with MgCl2 in an aqueous solution to test for freezing point depression. Through these various experiments we found NaCl to be the best deicer for our region due to its proficient freezing point depression and its cost.
