The Institute focuses its resources on generating new knowledge in international law, comparative public law and European Union law. It hopes to contribute to the further globalization of discourse in these fields. It particularly seeks to promote exchanges with researchers and its cooperation partners as well as dialogue with audience beyond the immediate scholarly community. Through this online series, the MPIL hopes to facilitate more intense scholarly communication and to encourage increased publication as well as the rapid circulation of new research.

Founded in , the IMPRS-SDR offers a multi-national student body the opportunity to examine and compare international dispute resolution from a legal perspective while also considering interdisciplinary, including political, sociological, historical, and economic aspects. In addition to providing a stimulating research environment, the IMPRS-SDR strives to furnish PhD candidates with first-hand practical insights into the many facets of international dispute resolution. In the third funding phase, PhD students are expected to focus on the development and the changes of dispute resolution in both private and public international law since the 2nd World War and especially after the Millennium. Additional emphasis shall be put on regional developments.
Marietta Auer studied law, philosophy and sociology at the University of Munich and Harvard University. She completed both the first and second state legal examinations in and , received her doctorate in law in , her M. She received her LL. From , she held the chair for civil law and philosophy of law at the University of Giessen, and from , she served as dean of the law faculty. Since , she is the director of the newly established Department for Multidisciplinary Theory of Law at the Max Planck Institute for Legal History and Legal Theory formerly Max Planck Institute for European Legal History Frankfurt am Main and is professor for private law as well as international and interdisciplinary foundations of law at the University of Giessen.
