The formation of an action potential can be divided into five steps. The hyperpolarized membrane is in a refractory period and cannot fire. Action potentials are formed when a stimulus causes the cell membrane to depolarize past the threshold of excitation, causing all sodium ion channels to open. When the potassium ion channels are opened and sodium ion channels are closed, the cell membrane becomes hyperpolarized as potassium ions leave the cell; the cell cannot fire during this refractory period. The action potential travels down the axon as the membrane of the axon depolarizes and repolarizes.

An action potential is an electrical impulse that begins at the axon hillock trigger zone , propagates away from the soma, and moves down the axon, synaptic knob, and synapse. The action potential is triggered by a depolarization of the neuron from mV to mV. When the cell reaches mV, the voltage change opens up voltage-gated sodium channels at the trigger zone. Voltage-gated potassium channels also open up during the voltage change from mV to mV. When the action potential reaches 0mV, the voltage-gated sodium channels begin to close and the potassium channels come closer to all being open.
