A critical lens essay is a type of essay aimed at providing a personal interpretation and analysis of a certain quotation or statement, proving one's opinion with the help of literature references. As a matter of fact, a critical lens essay is focused on highlighting strong and weak points of a given quote. Linking one's opinion to reputable sources makes a convincing effect on the reader, proving your ideas to be true. Writing such type of essay appears to be quite a challenging assignment for students. First, while studying at high school, college, or university, one has to obtain and develop such essential skills as critical and analytical thinking; ability to compare facts, theses, quotes, and ideas, make one's own statements and prove them, draw right conclusions. Second, a profound research on the given topic should be done, as it determines the further direction of your writing.

Learning Standards are defined as the knowledge, skills, and understandings that individuals can and do habitually demonstrate over time when exposed to high-quality instructional environments and learning experiences. In September , the Board of Regents adopted the newly revised English and Mathematics Learning Standards , which will be fully implemented by the school year. To learn more about the implementation timeline, please see the Next Generation Learning Standards website.
The City University of New York CUNY requires all students to demonstrate proficiency in English reading and writing and math in order to enroll in credit-bearing courses in the associated subject. Starting with the spring entering class, students who do not meet benchmark scores will no longer be administered a placement test; rather, CUNY will use a proficiency index to determine developmental education assignment. There are separate proficiency indexes for English and math. See the CUNY testing website for the benchmark scores that demonstrate proficiency.
